On Saturday, November 21, 2026, the City of Phoenix runs the Phoenix Summit Challenge. Most of the hikers will spend their morning on the Piestewa Peak Summit Trail, the Mohave Trail and the ridges around Dreamy Draw. This year's summit routes lean on the Phoenix Mountains Preserve more than any other preserve in the city. The entry-level route is also the cheapest way in by mileage, and it starts at the Piestewa Peak trailhead.
The city's event page says the challenge "has historically filled to capacity within moments of the start of registration." As of October 26, 2026, that wasn't the case for every route. The PHX4 Piestewa Peak start showed 76 openings on the city's registration system, and the PHX5 Dreamy Draw start showed 19. Those counts move every day. Still, if you live near the preserve, the event that usually sells out in seconds may have a spot left at the trailhead closest to your house.
The challenge has four tiers. PHX4, PHX5 and PHX7 count summits, and each offers more than one starting point. The fourth tier, PHX All Abilities, is an 8.16-mile set of loops with 438 feet of elevation gain. Each route's trails must be completed in order.
| Route | Start | Distance | Elevation gain | Phoenix Mountains Preserve stops |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PHX4 | Piestewa Peak | 11.90 mi | 3,489 ft | Piestewa Peak Summit Trail, Mohave Trail |
| PHX4 | Apache Wash | 12.97 mi | 3,069 ft | VOAZ Summit at Dreamy Draw, Piestewa Peak Summit Trail |
| PHX5 | Apache Wash Vista | 14.28 mi | 3,502 ft | VOAZ Summit, Piestewa Peak Summit Trail, Mohave Trail |
| PHX5 | Piestewa Peak | 15.02 mi | 3,903 ft | Piestewa Peak Summit Trail, Mohave Trail |
| PHX5 | Dreamy Draw | 16.07 mi | 3,744 ft | VOAZ Summit, Piestewa Peak Summit Trail |
| PHX7 | Piestewa Peak | 20.37 mi | 4,844 ft | Piestewa Peak Summit Trail, Mohave Trail |
| PHX7 | Desert Vista | 22.17 mi | 5,750 ft | Piestewa Peak Summit Trail |
| PHX7 | Deem Hills | 22.39 mi | 5,314 ft | VOAZ Summit, Mohave Trail |
The Piestewa Peak Summit Trail is on seven of the eight summit routes. The one route that skips it, PHX7 from Deem Hills, still sends hikers up the VOAZ Summit at Dreamy Draw and along the Mohave Trail. All eight routes then cross town and end the same way, on the Holbert Trail up to Dobbins Lookout at South Mountain. The other stops are spread out: Ridgeback Overlook and Apache Wash Vista in the north Valley, Deem Hills in the northwest, Dixie Summit, and Ranger Summit by shuttle to 5 Tables at South Mountain. The Phoenix Mountains Preserve is the stop nearly every summit hiker shares.
The 2026 routes are easier to take on than earlier versions, especially at the entry level. For the November 4, 2023 event, TrailKiosk reported a 16.4-mile PHX4, a 17.1-mile PHX5 and a 24.8-mile PHX7. Here is how this year compares:
The trail list changed too. Shaw Butte and Lookout Mountain Summit were on the 2023 list. Neither appears on any 2026 route the city has posted. The Piestewa Peak Summit Trail is on both lists.
Put that together and the PHX4 Piestewa start stands out. It is the shortest summit route in the 2026 event. Its first two trails are the Piestewa summit and the Mohave Trail. In late October it also had the most open spots of any route. If you already hike Piestewa before work, the first half of that route is your usual morning. Hikers must start their final ascent at Dobbins Lookout by 4:50 p.m.
As of October 26, here is where the other routes stood. PHX4 from Apache Wash had 54 openings and All Abilities had 32. PHX5 from Piestewa and from Apache Wash showed as full, and so did the PHX7 starts that were checked. Several PHX7 starts had waitlists.
If you aren't registered, the timing still matters if you plan to hike on November 21. Three of the scheduled starts are in this preserve, and they come in waves:
Hikers from the other starts will also come through during the day, since the Piestewa summit and the VOAZ Summit are on their routes too.
Parking is the open question. The city hands out parking wristbands at the mandatory bag pickup. It hasn't posted a 2026 notice about public access to the Piestewa or Dreamy Draw lots on event day. In 2023, TrailKiosk reported that the Piestewa and Desert Vista trailheads were closed to non-participants for event parking. The trails stayed open, but organizers asked other hikers to choose different trails that day and expected heavier traffic, which they said could stress dogs on the trail. That was one year's plan, not a promise for this one. You can confirm 2026 access with the PSC team at [email protected].
If you're signing up after reading this on November 5, timing is tight. The two city sources also disagree on the registration deadline. The event page says registration closes November 11 at midnight. The PHX4 Piestewa registration page shows a window running through November 18 at 11:59 p.m. To be safe, plan around the earlier date.
Bag pickup is mandatory. It's where you get your shirt, parking wristbands and event details, and where you finish the electronic tracking registration. Registrations are first come, first served, non-refundable and non-transferable, and the event goes on rain or shine. Times aren't posted or tracked.
The UROCK Festival runs from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the South Mountain Park/Preserve Activity Complex, with a DJ from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and local bands from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Live bands are new this year. Each individual registration covers festival entry, dinner with refreshments and an event shirt. Guests are welcome. Extra dinner tokens are sold at bag pickup, and a limited number are available on the day.
The city says all PSC proceeds go to the Phoenix Parks Foundation Trails Fund, which supports the 41,000 acres of preserve land and roughly 200 miles of trails Phoenix Parks and Recreation looks after. Seven of this year's eight summit routes climb the Piestewa Peak Summit Trail, so a large share of the event's hiking happens on the trails the fund helps maintain. The foundation's trail maintenance program explains more about that work.
